Preparing for an economy flight can be a frustrating experience.
My partner and I discovered a few strategies to make our lengthy economy flight more comfortable.
Booking an additional seat, often referred to as a “bubble” seat by some, proved to be our best choice.
We booked an upgrade to an “extra legroom” seat for the flight to ensure a more comfortable experience.
Three days before our flight, our airline gave us the opportunity to bid on a “bubble” seat, which would give us the chance to reserve the seat next to us so we wouldn’t be sitting next to another passenger.
We decided to give it a try together.
We had the opportunity to upgrade to two additional seats together for an extra cost, which would have secured a whole row on the plane for ourselves.
We were flying together and looking to cut costs, so we opted for a “bubble” seat bid, essentially allowing the two of us to occupy three seats for the price of two.
We received the news the day before our flight that our proposal had been accepted.

I was getting a seat in the center, with a tub or hollow in it.
I’d like to see more airlines offer upgrade options with extra legroom, but booking an additional seat in advance or bidding for upgraded seating with greater legroom space could be reasonable alternatives for now.
The main inconvenience of choosing a “bubble” seat was that we didn’t have the option to select our specific seating location. Normally, when booking, I prefer a window seat, but our preference resulted in us being seated in the middle section of the plane.
However, despite the fluctuating prices for “bubble” seats, paying a few hundred dollars for an extra seat and extra space wasn’t unreasonably expensive.
